The Shook Foundation distributes $38k in its Fourth grant cycle

The Shook Foundation is a non-profit organization funded and operated by the employees of Shook Construction and seeks to be an enduring resource for those they serve. With a vision to enrich the communities where the employees live and work through engagement and investment, all employee pledges and donations to the Foundation are used to contribute to non-profit organizations for transformational causes within the community.

In its fourth grant cycle, The Shook Foundation awarded 13 grants and distributed a total of $38,450 to local community organizations. Grant recipients include:


  • A Special Wish Foundation of Southwest Ohio, Dayton, OH, $5,000 A Special Wish Foundation–Dayton Chapter grants the wish of a child or adolescent (birth through age 20) who has been diagnosed by a physician with a life-threatening disorder. Over the past 40 years, they have granted over 1,800 wishes to children with life-threatening disorders.

  • CHOICES Inc., Dayton, OH, $5,000 CHOICES serves youth through foster care, independent living, and home-based services, and its mission is to bring change to youth and families by providing personalized services and building safe environments. All programs are currently growing, serving 360 unique youth in the first quarter of 2024.


  • Kids in New Directions (KIND), Dayton, OH, $1,500 Established in 1987, KIND is a free inner-city youth organization dedicated to improving the lives of young people by building a foundation in Christianity through education and life experiences that will encourage them to change the world for good.

  • Fairmount Center for the Arts, Novelty, OH, $3,000 Fairmount Center for the Arts has been offering classes in the visual and performing arts for over 50 years. The Center is committed to “enriching lives through the arts” through classes, workshops, performances, festivals, and exhibitions.

  • May Dugan Center, Cleveland, OH, $1,500 The May Dugan Center provides comprehensive services and programs to individuals and families throughout the Cleveland area, including food, clothing, behavioral health counseling, adult education services, job searches, victim services, trauma counseling, and more.

  • McKinney Vento Unhoused Student Education Program, Dayton, OH, $4,800 The Dayton Public School McKinney-Vento Homeless Children and Youth (HCY) Programs ensure that all homeless children and youth have equal access to a free and appropriate public education, including public preschool education. In collaboration with homeless shelters, rapid re-housing programs, school staff, parents, and community agencies, they identify and address the unique challenges faced by these students.

  • Miami Valley Child Development Centers, Dayton, OH, $3,000 Miami Valley Child Development Centers is southwest Ohio’s Head Start agency. For over 55 years, they’ve been providing free and low-cost early learning and child care to children from age 6 weeks to 5. As important, its Family Support Specialists, Home Visitors, and Coaches partner with families to help them become financially stable and self-supporting.

  • Ohio's Hospice of Dayton, Dayton, OH, $2,000 Since 1978, Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton has served patients and families in the Dayton region in their homes, extended care and assisted living facilities, and the Hospice House location in Dayton. A variety of grief support services are available to the entire community through the Pathways of Hope Grief Counseling Center. Serving over 1,000 patients daily, they are nationally recognized for outstanding care.

  • Pink Ribbon Good, Dayton, OH, $5,000 Pink Ribbon Good exists to serve every person and family affected by breast and gynecological cancer. They provide free healthy meals, rides to treatment, housecleaning essentials and peer support so no one is alone in the fight.

  • Shoes 4 the Shoeless, Dayton, OH, $1,500 Shoes 4 the Shoeless is a non-profit that provides new, correctly fitting gym shoes and socks to Southwest Ohio children in desperate need. Through a uniquely efficient and effective system, they help children eliminate one of poverty’s most visible stigmas.

  • St. Vincent Family Services, Columbus, OH, $2,000 St. Vincent Family Services helps families build bright futures by providing trauma-informed pediatric behavioral health care within a learning community to change the lives of children and families. The center serves children from pre-school through high school and their families.


  • The Panther Paws, New Franklin, OH, $2,650 The Panther Paws serve as Manchester High School’s football booster club. They fundraise, assist in uniform and equipment purchases, buy and distribute apparel, run the press box, and more to provide support to the football coaching staff, student-athletes and families, and the entire Manchester student body.


  • Vocational Guidance Services, Cleveland, OH, $1,500 Vocational Guidance Services is a vocational rehabilitation agency with a mission to create pathways for individuals with disabilities to engage in the community, achieve greater independence and attain employment. They envision an inclusive community where each person with a disability reaches their full potential.


In total, the Foundation has now distributed over $103,000 to 40 different community organizations since launching in January 2022.
